... is the motto of 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide who have founded 29.000 clubs in 159
countries. They constitute a non-ideological civilian fellowship of men and women committed to the
promotion of humanitarian aid and international understanding irrespective of political boundaries.
Two of Rotary International's main projects are the "Polio Plus Campaign" to eradicate
polio and the world's most extensive private international youth exchange programme.

Rotary was founded in 1905 by Chicago attorney Paul Harris and is the oldest existing service
club today. Its world headquarters are located in Evanston near Chicago, USA.

The Rotarian world is divided into 34 areas and 527 districts, each of which comprises 50 clubs.
Germany has 14 districts with 755 clubs and 35.000 members. Each district is headed by a governor
who is elected for one year. For the duration of this term, he is member of the Governors' Council,
the top coordinating authority of Rotary Germany.

The organisation which is dedicated to "Service above Self" raises considerable
financial means in its 29.113 clubs each year. The current balance of the German clubs for the year
1997/98 amounts to about 26 million Deutschmarks. 17.7 million of this sum are spent on
"Rotary Foundation" (see RDG). This sum includes payment in kind and voluntary work which
Rotarians organize in aid of individual social and other projects.
